Centro de Salud

Today Franco and I went to the public hospital in Puebla. There are two, one for each half of the city. And again, the waiting room was full of patients waiting to be seen by a handful of doctors. We shadowed a really sweet lady doctor through her morning consults. She took a little more time with her patients and did a lot more physical examination. She sees all kinds of patients but most of the patients today were middle age to elderly women, many overweight and diabetic. I'm surprised by the patients' attitude here. In general they are very respectful of the doctor and always appreciative. They are much less demanding than patients in the U.S., maybe because they are just thankful that they can be seen at all by a doctor. Patients here get free care and free medications through the state so patients coming in for general consult are not generally worried about paying for their expenses, they just have to wait forever to see a doctor.

Tonight in cooking class we made mole poblano, a dish that is unique to Puebla. It's basically a chicken smothered in chocolate/chili mole sauce with beats on a tortilla. I think I'm going to miss the food here more than almost anything!
